The Noshery
Issue 2 Volume 1 May 2007

A Note from the Editor

Dear Readers:

Noshery May 2007 IssueMay is a month of celebrations. The first of the celebrations that the month brings us is the advent of the warm weather and longer days of spring when we will finally put away our snow shovels and bring out our grills. In our kitchens we will begin to think of lighter meals made with farm fresh vegetables and fruits. This May we here at Noshery are also celebrating the success of our first issue in April and we want to thank you for all your comments and suggestions that we will be incorporating into our magazine as we go along.

This issue is paying tribute to some of the celebrations of May: we see the return of the spring-time sporting events, not the least of which is the Kentucky Derby, which runs the first weekend in May. Although this is an event specific to Kentucky, many people across the United States and Canada follow the excitement and the color of the race on television and get a bit teary eyed at the end with the rendition of My Old Kentucky Home sung with fervor, if a little off-key.

May is of course when we celebrate Mother’s Day, and the Noshery is commemorating the day with recipes from some of our staff members who are sharing their mom’s recipes. We hope that this will inspire you to send us one or two recipes from your mom’s or dad’s recipe file, which we will print in future editions of the magazine.

We are also thinking now of the celebration of Cinco de Mayo, a national holiday in Mexico but one that is catching on in the United States and Canada.

Finally, the end of May finds Americans celebrating Memorial Day and Canadians celebrating Victoria Day as we all observe “unofficially,” of course, the start of summer. These holidays are celebrated in both countries in similar ways; family and friends get together for BBQs and will often end the weekend at a community fireworks show. We included, in this issue, a fabulous birthday cake recipe and we invite you to bake it for your families.

As always, this issue has some cooking tips from our resident chef, Paul Rinehart, and we include many recipe suggestions that we hope will add to your enjoyment of the many celebrations of May. Please continue to let us know how we can make Noshery the magazine that you, the family cook, turns to when looking for inspiration.
